Classical Queeros is a podcast that highlights queer classical composers, while also breaking down classist barriers that have been in place for centuries.
In each episode, hosts Alice Park and Shahid Osuna learn about a different talented composer such as Ethel Smyth or Billy Strayhorn. Educational and hilarious, these episodes do a deep-dive into the lives and works of these composers, while discussing what kept them out of the spotlight for so long. (Hint: it's always straight white men.)
Classical music has a history of elitism - whether it's the moral superiority composers and conductors tend to bestow upon themselves, or the gatekeeping that goes on in all facets of the field. Shahid and Alice want to open up the doors to everyone, and make sure that the room we end up in is safe and welcome to all.
